What began as a solemn farewell for beloved comedian Zakaria Kariuki, popularly known as KK Mwenyewe, quickly turned into a scene of public outcry as mourners lashed out at Dennis Itumbi, the Head of Creative Economy and Special Projects, during his speech. The incident underscores growing public frustration, a sentiment increasingly visible at recent gatherings involving government officials.

Itumbi initially received a warm welcome as he stepped onto the podium to address the grieving crowd. However, the mood soured rapidly when he began detailing government initiatives aimed at supporting the creative industry.

"We have also scrapped the DST tax. We have also made plans to ensure that content creators come together in a SACCO where they can access funds," Itumbi announced.

His remarks were immediately met with a chorus of disapproval. Shouts of "Uongo!" (Lies!) and "Kasongo ni Wantam" (a local slang term expressing strong disapproval, roughly translating to "Kasongo is bad/unwanted") echoed through the venue.

Attempting to regain control, Itumbi shifted his focus from government initiatives to addressing KK Mwenyewe's bereaved family, specifically pledging support for the comedian's sister's education. Far from calming the crowd, this gesture appeared to intensify their frustration. More chants of "Wantam! Wantam!" erupted, leading to his eventual departure from the stage.

Before exiting, Itumbi retorted, "That's okay, you can shout all you want, but these content creators need money in their pockets, and we will ensure money gets into their pockets."

This incident at KK Mwenyewe's funeral is not isolated. In recent months, high-ranking government officials and leaders allied with President William Ruto have faced similar public heckling.

For example, on Friday, April 4, President Ruto himself had to intervene when Tharaka Nithi Women Representative Susan Ngugi was heckled during her speech in Chuka Town. The President, who was touring the county, had invited the county MP to speak. However, a section of the crowd began to jeer, forcing her to cut her speech short. Afterwards, Ruto appealed to the residents, urging them to "Surely, you people, this is a lady. Don't make too much noise for her."

The comedian died on 15th July, 2025  while receiving treatment at Kiambu Level 5 Hospital.
