Basuba Village, Lamu County, Kenya – Residents of Basuba village in the Boni Forest endured a night of terror on Friday as over 60 suspected Al-Shabaab militants stormed the area, opening fire indiscriminately and engaging security forces for over an hour.
The attack, which reportedly began around 9 PM, saw some militants launching a direct assault while others strategically surrounded the General Service Unit (GSU) security camp stationed in the village. GSU officers bravely engaged the attackers, holding their ground for more than an hour before the militants ultimately retreated.
Villagers recounted a harrowing experience, describing how the attackers fired at least four Rocket-Propelled Grenade (RPG) rounds into both the village and the security camp. One of the rockets reportedly struck a home, sending panic through the community as residents scrambled for cover. What began as a peaceful night quickly devolved into chaos and fear as villagers desperately sought to protect themselves from the intense assault.
Thankfully, no fatalities or injuries have been reported so far. In the wake of the attack, security agencies have significantly intensified their operations in the region, with ground troops actively pursuing the assailants.
This incident highlights the ongoing security challenges in areas bordering the Boni Forest, a known hideout for Al-Shabaab militants.
