A devastating train derailment occurred in southern Germany on Sunday, resulting in at least three fatalities and multiple serious injuries. The regional passenger train derailed near Riedlingen, approximately 158 kilometers west of Munich, at around 6:10 p.m. local time.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation by federal and local police. Emergency responders are at the scene, with rescuers seen climbing atop the carriages to assist the injured. Photos from the scene show parts of the train on its side.
Around 100 people were onboard the train when at least two carriages derailed in a forested area. The exact number of injuries is not yet clear. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed his condolences to the families of the victims on social media, mourning the loss of life.
Deutsche Bahn, Germany's national railway operator, has yet to comment on the incident. The investigation is ongoing, and further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
