MWIHOKO, Kenya – A light aircraft crashed into buildings in the Dagama area of Mwihoko, Kiambu County, on Thursday afternoon, igniting a fierce fire and prompting a rapid response from local residents and emergency services.
The incident occurred at approximately 3:11 p.m. while a helicopter was flying over the residential area. According to a report by Kenyans.co.ke, the aircraft came down and immediately burst into flames, sending a plume of thick smoke into the sky.
Videos and images circulating on social media showed the helicopter's wreckage engulfed in fire as a crowd of residents gathered from a safe distance. The images also captured the presence of military officials at the scene, who were reportedly assisting with rescue efforts and helping to extinguish the fire.
While the exact number of casualties and the identities of those on board have not yet been officially released, residents were the first responders, rushing to the scene to assist in any way they could. An official from the Githurai 45 Sub-County police command, Maurice Odanga, confirmed the incident to NTV Kenya, stating that he was on his way to the scene to assess the situation.
The crash has caused significant concern among residents in the densely populated area. Investigations into the cause of the crash are expected to be launched by relevant authorities, including the Air Accident Investigation Department, to determine what led to the tragic incident. The extent of the damage to the buildings hit by the aircraft is still being evaluated.
